Standard Bank supports GIBS in experiencing the arts

13 October 2008

Standard Bank has partnered the University of Pretoria's Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in a new innovation in business education: The GIBS Arts Experience. It features compelling new forms of art, presented in surprising places in unpredictable ways, each designed to provoke new ways of thinking.

Some of the latest acquisitions from Standard Bank's corporate art collection will be loaned to GIBS for the week-long programme.

These include works from Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner Pieter Hugo, as well as Diane Victor, David Mogano, Trevor Makhoba, Sabelo Mlangeni, Andrew Tshabangu and Nicholas Hlobo. Sculptures from Jackson Hlungwani, Sydney Kumalo and Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner Wim Botha are also part of the loan.

Business leaders are often highly intuitive, creative people who include gut feel in their day-to-day decision-making processes, however many business people underestimate the power of intuition and creativity, particularly in today's society which works within such diverse parameters.

"South African business is extremely lively at present, where the ground itself seems to be shifting. During such periods of transformation and uncertainty, successful nations find creative solutions through personal and social innovation. Art stimulates this creativity, breaking down rigid thought patterns and offering new alternatives to business problems," explains Professor Nick Binedell, Director of GIBS.

Strijdom van der Merwe, one of the featured artists at the GIBS Arts Experience, believes that "The creative 'mind set' in the business world is linked to the creative 'mind set' of the artist and the art world. These two different disciplines are increasingly being seen as major role players in contributing to a better society and a more appreciative understanding of the human spirit."

"Thinking is a key ingredient which is often neglected in our operational world. By transporting our minds into unfamiliar territory, we can release fresh mental resources, unleashing our creativity," says Binedell.

The GIBS Arts Experience will take place on the GIBS Campus in Illovo, Johannesburg, from 3-7 November, and will include not only the work of artists such as Strijdom van der Merwe, but also improvisational theatre, art-focused forums and music. Further information and the week's programme will be available on www.gibs.co.za from 20 October.
