Standard Bank has won the International Sponsorship category of the 2006 Business Day/Business and Arts South Africa (Basa) awards for the "Picasso in Africa" exhibitions and events.
The yearly awards focus on support for the arts and cultural events, projects or organisations, the annual awards recognise.
Judges for the awards are drawn from business, marketing and the arts in South Africa and look for "creative business thinking and identify partnerships that go beyond simple chequebook sponsorship and make a difference to both sponsor and recipient".
"Picasso in Africa" involved bringing the works by the 20th century European master Pablo Picasso to South Africa. The works were shown in Johannesburg and Cape Town from February to May 2006. Add to these were various educational, community and staff programmes.
Sarah-Anne Orphanides, Director, Group Marketing, Standard Bank, said on receiving the award from Zanele Mbeki, South Africa's First Lady: "The award recognizes our contribution to the arts on the continent. Generally, you can tell of a nation's history through the various forms of art. In fact, art tells of the stories of mankind and its challenges through time. It is indeed, very much the soul of a nation."
"We believe that by investing in the arts, we enrich the lives of our customers and those of the communities in which we operate, learning our heritage in order to forge into the future."
This is not the first time Standard Bank has picked up a Basa award:
