17 May 2006

Standard Bank has been awarded the contracts to be the banking services provider to the Tshwane metro and Saldanha Bay municipality.

Says Karin Mathebula, Director Group Head, Public Sector at Standard Bank: "We are delighted to have been awarded both these accounts. Tshwane, being the capital city and one of the metros, is a very important and prestigious account.

"Saldanha Bay is strategically positioned with a key industrial development zone within its boundaries and is part of the Government's Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA). Winning these accounts, offers us the opportunity to assist with some of the key issues facing these municipalities, such as customer service and billing."

She says that Standard Bank had a new strategy when it came to dealing with municipalities based on addressing the key challenges facing municipalities.

"We have reconfigured our approach to focus on using what the bank is good at, to servicing municipalities. Municipal clients are also not treated in isolation to the rest of the bank and our services to them have been integrated into the day-to-day operations of the bank. In addition, Standard Bank has a good track record and extensive experience in servicing all manner of public sector institutions."

Standard Bank deploys a multi-dimensional approach in servicing municipalities. It focuses on credit control, which is obviously important to the municipalities' access to finance and rating in the market; and transaction banking, which offers the municipality access to Standard Bank's cutting edge electronic banking and cash solutions infrastructure for day-to-day transactions.

"Our focus on assisting with revenue management has led us to create new services built on the back of our traditional services and infrastructure, which are specifically aimed at enhancing revenue collection and management by the municipality, as well as customer service. Our role in intermediation (raising capital and debt) is also important, and will be crucial in advancing charter objectives. These are all areas that are vital for the efficient running of a municipality.

"It is important for us to support municipalities with industrial and infrastructure development projects, which are fundamental to the development and growth of our economy. We are looking forward to working with the City of Tshwane and Saldanha Bay municipality," says Mathebula.
