Standard Bank ranked 17th in FM Top Companies survey

Standard Bank has again been ranked in the top 20 in the Financial Mail's annual Top Companies survey. The bank was placed 17th, one position up from the previous year.

The Top Companies award winners are the "bluest of blue chips", according to the Financial Mail. The top 20 companies needed to show a good track record as well as proof of likely future performance.

The Financial Mail looked closely at the historical financial performance of the companies and assessed their prospects for the years ahead.

Referring to Standard Bank, the Financial Mail said: "South Africa's largest banking group had a great year because of buoyant consumer spending. This year also looks good - racing ahead in market share, 40% growth in the mortgage book in the year to March, total assets up by 28% - far ahead of the other large banks."

The Financial Mail went on to say: "Standard's consolidated brand has proved to be a winner, and an innovative empowerment deal gives substantial equity to its senior staff".
