14 February 2003
Standard Bank today donated 52 mobile libraries worth over R466 000 to 26 Soweto schools.
The libraries, complete with the first 100 books selected in conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Education, will be sources of knowledge to hundreds of primary and secondary school pupils throughout Soweto.
As part of the donation, the bank and the Department of Education will provide training to schools on the effective use of the libraries.
Standard Bank Deputy Chief Executive Myles Ruck handed over the resource units to Gauteng Education Department officials at a function held at the bank's Jabulani branch.
Over the past three year Standard Bank has committed over R17 million towards educational projects throughout South Africa with emphasis on programmes that enhance mathematics and science skills in schools and tertiary institutions.
In addition the bank has committed over R9 million to a programme that provides economic and financial education to over a million South African learners.
Says Ruck: "Education is critical for the growth and development of our nation. The donation of these libraries falls in line with our social investment programmes that are aimed at equipping learners with skills in maths, science, financial and general literacy. We urge learners to take advantage of these resources and gain knowledge that will help advance them and our country."
Says Ignatius Jacobs, Gauteng Education MEC: "Today's donation is another demonstration of private-public partnerships at work. The Gauteng Education Department and Standard Bank have an established partnership in educational development. We'd also like to encourage learners to make maximum value of this generous gesture
