Standard Bank still leads cricket sponsorship pack

Standard Bank has been voted South Africa's leading cricket sponsor.

Most of the South Africans polled for the November/December 2002 BMI Research, readily associate cricket sponsorship with the bank.

Total awareness of cricket as a sport sponsored by Standard Bank reached its highest level ever during the research period with 63,8 % awareness by black respondents and 69,7 % by whites.

The bank also leads the pack in terms of spontaneous public awareness of its cricket sponsorship. Of those polled, 46,2 % of black and 40,3 % white respondents immediately associated the bank with cricket sponsorship. Castle Lager was placed second with 20,7 % black and 27,6 % white respondents.

This performance is prior to and excludes any impact of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003.

Says Standard Bank Sponsorship Director, Khanyi Mlambo: "We're are very pleased with the latest figures. For years the bank has been supporting cricket and its development. It is satisfying to see that South Africans are acknowledging our efforts. This will encourage us to continue to help improve this wonderful game."

According to the BMI report cricket has grown in popularity as a spectator sport in South Africa during the period 1992 to 2002:
  • for white adults from 4th to 2nd place (after rugby);
  • for blacks adults from 13th to 4th place (after soccer, boxing and athletics)
