Standard Bank gives Africa cricket development R2 million boost

17 March 2003

Standard Bank is donating R2 million to cricket development in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Kenya.

Standard Bank Group chairman Derek Cooper made the announcement at an excursion hosted by the bank to Robben Island today (17 March) for International Cricket Council delegates.

The money is part of a substantial monetary incentive that the bank set aside for the Proteas should they have won the World Cup or made it to the final. Part of the incentive money was earmarked for cricket development.

"As sponsors of one-day cricket in South Africa for the past six years, we are pleased to announce that we will be paying out R2 million for cricket development. We have decided to make it available to all the African teams that participated. It will therefore be shared among Kenya, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa," said Cooper. This is in addition to the R6,25 million that the bank has contributed already to South African cricket development over a three-year period as part of the Cricket 2003 Legacy project.

He said cricket lovers had watched with delight as Kenya and Zimbabwe had progressed through the earlier rounds of the World Cup to reach the Super Sixes. The fact that the Kenyan team had reached the semi-finals of the tournament was testimony to its courage and determination.

Cooper said that South Africans would naturally have liked to see the Proteas bring home the silverware. That was not to be this time around. "We, however, take great pride in the fact that our region has been able to successfully stage what has easily been the biggest such sporting event held here, and to be a home from home for many thousands of most welcome visitors."
