15 April 2003
Aspiring musicians, promoters and artist managers in Mpumalanga will have the chance to get the inside track on the music industry at an all day Standard Bank Joy of Jazz workshop in Nelspruit on Saturday 26 April.
Run by leading professionals in the industry, the free workshop features presentations by the Midi (Music Industry Development Initiative) Trust, SAMPA (South African Music Promoters Association) and acclaimed musician Ray Phiri, who is one of the headline artists at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival in Nelspruit a week later.
Says Peter Tladi of T.Musicman, the Joy of Jazz promoter: "We always include a developmental angle to all our festivals. We find in some of the outlying provinces that there is little opportunity for skills transfer because the music industry is based in Gauteng. Saturday's workshop will give a good introduction to the many facets of the music industry."
This year the Mpumalanga Regional Department of Culture, partners in the Joy Of Jazz workshop, are sponsoring 18 candidates from the six Mpumalanga provincial districts to attend the workshop.
The workshops are a precursor to the massive Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz festival that takes place at the Lowveld Showgrounds in Nelspruit on Saturday 3 May. It will feature Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa, Oliver Mtukudzi, Bongo Maffin, Ray Phiri, Art Ensemble Ladies in Jazz, Gibraltar, Fantastic 4 and Mamelodi Phambili.
Festival promoters T.Musicman have arranged buses from Johannesburg and Pretoria to take fans to a weekend of fun. This is the first time such a travel package is being offered for a Joy of Jazz festival. There are various packages available, including the luxury VIP package that includes golf, sightseeing tours, champagne breakfast and transfers to and from the festival.
Entry to the Joy Of Jazz workshop is free and it runs from 9am to 4pm at the Mbombela City Hall.
