15 May 2003

Standard Bank is funding a project aimed at the upliftment of education in the Matatiele area of KwaZulu-Natal.

Standard Bank Foundation - the bank's social responsibility arm - has donated R30 200 to a Saturday school project at King Edward High School.

The project was initiated by Standard Bank staff in the Matatiele area. It aims to provide supplementary classes for grade 11 and 12 students from schools in Matatiele and the surrounding areas.

Speaking at the recent launch of the project, the Mayor of Matatiele, Cedric Canham said: "It is heart warming when a school like King Edward High School, which is fortunate enough to have more than its basic needs, opens its doors to its fellow citizens."

He added: "The initiative taken by Standard Bank to assist us in addressing the educational needs of our people have been warmly welcomed by the community of Matatiele."

Canham said that education was very high on the list of priorities in the Matatiele community. "A sound education is not only good for the individual but also for the town and the country." "Through the Standard Bank Foundation we have been able to contribute in a meaningful way to various education and community development projects around South Africa. The focus of our funding within education is Mathematics, Science and Technology. We therefore believe that this project will play a vital role in contributing to the improvement of education in these areas," said Dhashni Pillay of the Standard Bank Foundation.

"Investing in education is investing in one's future. The Standard Bank Foundation recognises the importance of education and the importance of strong partnerships in the process of improving and contributing to the future of South Africa. Therefore, we believe in establishing public and private sector partnerships. By forging these partnerships, we can begin to tackle the twin problem of unemployment and poverty. And we can also work toward becoming meaningful players in the competitive global economy."
