Standard Bank recognised for its contribution to the arts

22 May 2003

Standard Bank's continued contribution to the arts in South Africa has again been recognised by Business and Arts South Africa (Basa), a government and business sector initiative that highlights and acknowledges innovative and successful sponsorship of the arts.

Standard Bank, in collaboration with the French Institute of South Africa, received a Basa Arts Sponsorship Award for international sponsorship for its sponsorship of a Joan Miro exhibition. This is the sixth consecutive year that the bank has won a Basa award.

The exhibition of Spanish surrealist Joan Miro ran at the Standard Bank Gallery in Johannesburg from mid-September 2002 until mid-December 2002.

Basa was founded in 1997 as a joint initiative of government - through the arts and culture department - and the private sector. Its mandate is to promote and encourage mutually beneficial and sustainable business-arts partnerships.

Says Mandie van der Spuy, Manager Arts Sponsorships at Standard Bank: "We are delighted to again be a recipient of such a prestigious award. Our sponsorship of the arts in South Africa goes back more than 20 years and we are very aware of the important role that arts plays in the future of our country."

Standard Bank has won Basa awards in these categories:

1998 Long-term Development: SB National Arts Festival, Grahamstown
1999 Strategic Sponsorship: Standard Bank Jazz Festival series
2000 International Sponsorship: International programme of the 25th anniversary of the Standard Bank National Arts Festival, Grahamstown
