BEE mining finance comes under the spotlight

05 June 2003

Entrepreneurs and black economic empowerment (BEE) members will next week be attending a one-week workshop on mining finance for BEE companies.

The BEE Mining Finance 2003 workshop, organised by Standard Bank in conjunction with the Department of Minerals and Energy and LTR Limited, will be at Standard Bank?s Morningside Management College from 9-13 June. Minerals and Energy Affairs Minister Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will open the proceedings.

The workshop is supported by the W K Kellogg Foundation ? an American non-profit organization ? and is the first of several workshops focused on creating better understanding of business development issues for mining entrepreneurs.

Standard Bank and the W K Kellogg Foundation are involved in a long-term banking leadership development programme in co-operation with several southern African universities.

LTR Ltd is managing the banking leadership programme on behalf of the W K Kellogg Foundation.

Commenting on the workshop, the Minister of Minerals and Energy Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said: ?The significance of the BEE mining finance workshop is in equipping established and budding entrepreneurs to understand the issues of finance in mining. Historically disadvantaged individuals need this kind of programme to help them master the business environment. Government is grateful to the Kellogg Foundation/Standard Bank partnership for producing such an important tool that will facilitate the entry of previously disadvantaged people into the mining industry.?

Says Ben Kruger, Standard Corporate and Merchant Bank (SCMB) Managing Director: ?Standard Bank has always been an active supporter and financial participant in South Africa?s mining community and we are proud to facilitate this workshop to help create a successful future for South Africa?s mining industry.?
