Standard Bank opens science centre for rural pupils

18 June 2003

Standard Bank today (18 June) opened a multi-purpose school laboratory which will benefit over 15 000, rural North West Province learners over the next three years.

Although based at MH Baloyi High School in Brits, the government-endorsed, state-of-the-art laboratory will be a centre of knowledge shared with learners from five nearby schools.

As part of the donation, local educators will be trained on how to use the laboratory equipment. Learners will be taught and experiment with science, mathematics and technology.

Standard Bank Foundation Senior Manager Andrew Modise handed over the resource centre to North West Education Department officials at a function in Brits.

Over the past three years Standard Bank has committed over R17 million towards educational projects throughout South Africa with emphasis on programmes that enhance Mathematics and Science skills in schools and tertiary institutions.

The bank has funded similar centres in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

In addition the bank has committed over R9 million to a programme that provides economic and financial education to over a million South African learners.

Says Modise: "Education is critical for the growth and development of our nation. Our involvement with this project falls in line with our social investment programmes that are aimed at equipping learners with skills in Maths, science, financial and general literacy. We urge learners to take advantage of these resources and gain knowledge that will help advance them and our country. We hope this centre of excellence will produce South Africa's future scientists."
