Standard Bank Chief Executive Jacko Maree has won The Sunday Times Business Leader of the Year and the Wits Business School Annual Management Excellence awards.
Says The Sunday Times: "Rated as one of corporate South Africa's most clear-thinking, commonsensical business leaders by his fellow chief executives, Maree has already been voted Business Times Business Leader of the Month twice in two years."
On accepting the awards on 2 November 2004, he said: "Our vision is to make a difference to financial services in South Africa and in other emerging markets. Our strategy hasn't changed since the late 1980s and the people who should take the credit for this are Henri de Villiers, Conrad Strauss, Eddie Theron and my predecessor Mike Vosloo."
Maree said that Standard Bank Group will remain part of the fabric of South Africa.
"We will remain based in the Johannesburg CBD, with our only listing being on the JSE. Standard Bank does not need and is not seeking a foreign partner or controlling shareholder.
He added that the bank is totally committed to black economic empowerment.
"We cannot ignore our history and just move forward as if nothing happened. We are therefore delighted to have Saki, and more recently Cyril Ramaphosa as partners to help guide the group going forward."
Maree thanked the non-executive directors of the bank for their commitment and expressed his pride in all employees for their effort in reinvigorating Standard Bank.
